A patient facing a hip replacement today has no way to compare costs across hospitals. No way to estimate what they will actually owe out of pocket. No way to know whether the hospital across town charges three times more for the same procedure — with worse outcomes.
The Data Exists — But It’s Useless
Section titled “The Data Exists — But It’s Useless”In 2021, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services began requiring every hospital in the United States to publish machine-readable pricing files. The mandate worked — over 80% of hospitals now publish this data.
But publishing data is not the same as making it useful.
Hospital pricing files arrive in over 20 different formats:
- Nested JSON schemas with inconsistent key names
- Wide-format Excel workbooks with merged headers
- Pipe-delimited CSVs with encoding inconsistencies
- XML variants with hospital-specific schemas
- Multi-sheet spreadsheets with metadata in unexpected rows
A single state can contain hundreds of millions of pricing rows across hundreds of hospitals. The files are designed for regulatory compliance, not human comprehension.
The mandate created the data supply. Nobody made it useful. ClearPrice exists to close that gap.
